MENSTRUAL IRREGULARITIES

What Is A Hormonal Assessment Of Menstrual Irregularities?

A hormonal assessment evaluates the possibility of hormonal imbalances as the root cause of missed periods (amenorrhea), abnormally long cycles (oligomenorrhea), and prolonged menstrual bleeding and bleeding between periods.

Several factors, both physiological and emotional, can contribute to menstrual irregularities, mostly owing to how each one affects the organs that regulate your hormones. Sudden weight loss, low weight, overweight, restrictive dieting, chronic stress, prolonged use of birth control pills, excessive exercising, and thyroid disorders are just some of the common causes of irregular menstruation. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome also typically experience menstrual irregularities.

Who Should Undergo Hormonal Assessment Of Menstrual Irregularities?

Women who fail to conceive, and those who experience abnormal uterine bleeding and irregular cycles should undergo hormone tests.

What To Expect

During a hormonal assessment, hormone levels are evaluated. Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Luteneizing Hormone (LH), and E2 (Estradiol) are typically tested. For women suspected of infertility, levels of prolactin, progesterone, androgens, and Thyroid Hormone (TSH) are also routinely checked.

Below are just some of the things you can expect when you undergo hormonal assessment:

  1. You will be asked to come in for your lab test between Day 2 to Day 5 of your menstrual cycle. Keep in mind that Day 1 is the first day of your menstrual period.
  2. Blood will be extracted. The samples will then be sent to the lab to test for the levels of key hormones which may be causing your irregular periods.
  3. In case of amenorrhea, your physician will prescribe a hormone stimulating medication which you will take for 7 to 10 days to induce menstrual flow.
  4. Expect a follow-through consultation. Your physician will prescribe more tests if necessary to pinpoint what causes menstrual irregularities, which may include ultrasound, thyroid scan, or MRI.
  5. You may be asked to make several lifestyle adjustments.
  6. As soon as you experience normal menstrual cycle, you can expect to improve your chances of getting pregnant.
