EVALUATION OF MALE INFERTILITY BY SEMEN ANALYSIS

Who Should Undergo Semen Analysis?

Men who have been experiencing difficulties getting their partners pregnant should definitely undergo semen analysis. Proper diagnosis is the first requirement in seeking male infertility treatment.

What To Expect:

Many factors can cause infertility in males. Proper evaluation of male infertility by semen analysis can significantly increase pregnancy rates when the underlying reasons for male infertility are treated.

Below are just some of the things you can expect before, during and after undergoing

  1. You will express a sample of your fresh semen. Your physician advised you to abstain from sexual intercourse or defer from masturbating at least two days before the sample is taken.
  2. Based on your test results, your physician will determine your fertility and inform you about the health of your semen and sperm. If your results show concerns, your physician will advise you on a proper course of action, including more tests, treatment and use of assisted reproduction when applicable.

What Is Semen Analysis In Relation To Male Infertility?

Semen Analysis includes analysis of sperm. A couple’s ability to conceive is routinely addressed by examining both the female partner and the male partner. Male infertility is diagnosed via several means and a semen analysis can provide a wealth of information about the fertility of the male partner.

The semen will typically be judged by the quality of the sperm it carries, that includes sperm count, sperm concentration, sperm morphology, sperm DNA integrity, and sperm motility. Semen will also be tested for pH and volume. Simultaneously, other diagnostic procedures may also be performed. These tests will probe into sperm production, presence of fructose produced by your seminal vesicles, and abnormalities such as ejaculatory duct obstruction and retrograde ejaculation.

The physician may also investigate the presence of obstructive azoospermia, a common condition developed by males diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, which could be blocking sperm transport via the vas deferens.
