Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA) is a procedure used to retrieve sperm directly from the testicles in men who have no sperm in their ejaculate. This condition, known as azoospermia, can result from several factors, including blockages, injury, or issues with sperm production.
TESA is a relatively simple, minimally invasive procedure done under anesthesia, ensuring you are comfortable during the process. A fine needle is carefully inserted into the testicle to extract small amounts of tissue where sperm are produced. The retrieved sperm is then used to fertilize the female partner’s eggs through Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), a specialized form of in vitro fertilization (IVF) where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg.
TESA is primarily used for men with azoospermia, a condition where no sperm are present in the ejaculate. This may be due to a blockage in the reproductive tract (known as obstructive azoospermia), genetic conditions, or testicular problems that affect sperm production. In these cases, natural fertilization is not possible, but sperm can still be retrieved directly from the testicle for use in IVF.
TESA has high success rates. It is often recommended when other sperm retrieval methods have not been successful or when azoospermia is diagnosed.
